Basic Skills Count

As is obviously shown in the picture, the students are challenging the necessity of learning

those “seemingly easy and useless” rudiments, which is in fact a widely held view among many of us, especially the young people.

What the picture intends to imply is that learning basic things are very important. Lao Tzu,

the founder of Taoism and the great ancient Chinese thinker, once held, “Any long journey begins with a single small step”. Only with the accumulating of a single brick and tile, can we finally build a great mansion. The time and sweat we put in every day into our tasks is the foundation of our future success. If we should put even a little on a little, and should do this often, soon this too would become big.

People may laugh at us learning those “easy and useless” basic skills at the very beginning,

but once we insist till the final success, they will only regret what they have been thinking at the very ending.

Ø 第一段通过“As…, …, which…”

Ø 第三段采用了at the very beginning和at the very ending对仗的手法,凸显了作者在修辞运用上的

Conversation One

M: Hello, Professor Johnson.

W: Hello, Tony. So what shall we work on today?

M: Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn’t coming out right. What I thought I was

writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me – one I participate in.

(9)

W: What sport did you choose?

M: I decided to write about cross-country skiing.

W: What are you going to say about skiing?

M: That’s the problem. I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country. W: So why is that a problem?

M: As I start describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods, I keep mentioning how much effort it

takes to keep going. Cross-country skiing isn’t as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy. But that’s not part of my paper, so I guess I should leave it out. (10) But now I don’t know how to explain that feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for it. It all fits together. It’s not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds roll by. That’s different.

W: Then you’ll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross-country skiing is the kind

you earn by effort. Why leave that out? Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That’s common, right? (11)

M: Yeah, I guess so …

9. What is the topic of the man’s writing assignment?

10. What problem does the man have while working on his paper?

“Cross-country skiing isn’t as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy. But that’s not part of my paper, so I guess I should leave it out.”

11. What does the woman say is common in writing papers?

A)。 由对话中的“Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That’s common, right?”

about business people. (12) Tonight we have Mr. Steven Kayne, who has just taken over an established bicycle shop. Tell us, Mr. Kayne, what made you want to run your own store?

M: Well, I always loved racing bikes and fixing them. When I was working full-time as a

salesman for a big company, (13) I seldom had time to enjoy my hobby. I knew then that as soon as I had enough money to get my own business going, I’ll do it. (14) I had my heart set on it and I didn’t let anything stand in my way. When I went down to the bank and

got a business loan, I knew I’d love being my own boss. Now my time is my own. I open the store when I want and leave when I want.

W: You mean you don’t keep regular hours?

M: Well, the sign on my store says the hours are ten to six, but if business is slower than usual, I can just lock up and take off early.

W: Have you hired any employees to work with you yet?

M: Yeah, a couple of friends of mine who love biking as much as I do. (15) They help me out a few days a week. It’s great because we play cards or just sit around and talk when there are no customers.

W: Thank you, Mr. Kayne. We wish you success in your new business.

Section B

Passage One

I first met Joe Gans when we were both 9 years old, which is probably the only

reason he is one of my best friends. If I had first met Joe as a freshman in high school, we wouldn’t even have had the chance to get to know each other. (16) Joe is a day student, but I am a boarding student. We haven’t been in the same classes, sports or extra

curricula activities. Nonetheless, I spend nearly every weekend at his house, (17) and we talk on the phone every night. This is not to say that we would not have been compatible if we

had first met in our freshman year. Rather, we would not have been likely to spend enough time getting to know each other, due to the lack of immediately visible mutual interests.

In fact, to be honest, I struggle even now to think of things we have in common, but maybe that’s what makes us enjoy each other’s company so much. When I look at my friendship with Joe, I wonder how many people I’ve known whom I never disliked but simply didn’t take the time to get to know. Thanks to Joe, I have realized how little basis there is, for the social

divisions that exist in every community. (18) Since this realization, I have begun to make an even more determined effort to find friends in unexpected people and places.

16. Why does the speaker say Joe Gans became one of his best friends?

D)。 从短文中的“I first met Joe Gans when we were both 9 years old, which is probably the only reason he is one of my best

friends. If I had first met Joe as a freshman in high school, we wouldn’t even have had the chance to get to know each other.”

17. Where does the speaker spend most of his weekends?

B)。 由短文中的“Nonetheless, I spend nearly every weekend at his house”可知,作者周末几乎都呆在Joe家里。

18. What has the speaker learned from his friendship with Joe?

C)。由短文中的“Thanks to Joe, I have realized how little basis there is, for the social divisions that exist in every community.”

family relationships.

They have something in common in

this connection.

Passage Two

While Gail Opp-kemp, an American artist was giving a speech on the art of Japanese brush painting (19) to an audience that included visitors fromJapan, she was confused to see that many of her Japanese listeners have their eyes closed. Were they tuned off because an American had the nerve to instruct Japanese in their own art form or they deliberately tried to signal their rejection of her? Opp-kemp later found out that her listeners were not being

disrespectful. Japanese listeners sometimes closed their eyes to enhance

concentration.(20) Her listeners were showing their respect for her by chewing on her words. Some day you may be either a speaker or a listener in a situation involving people from other countries or members of minority group inNorth America. Learning how different cultures

signal respect can help you avoid misunderstandings. (21) Here are some examples. In the deaf culture ofNorth America, many listeners show applause not by clapping their hands but by waving them in the air. In some cultures, both overseas and in some minority groups inNorth America, listeners are considered disrespectful if they look directly at the speaker. Respect is shown by looking in the general direction but avoiding direct eye contact. In some countries, whistling by listeners is a sign of approval while in other courtiers it is a form of insult.

19. What did Opp-kemp’s speech focus on?

A)。 可以从“Gail Opp-kemp, an

American artist was giving a speech on the art of Japanese brush painting”得知,这位艺术家演讲的内容是关于日本毛笔画艺术的,故可直接选出A)。

20. Why do Japanese listeners sometimes close their eyes while listening to a speech?

B)。 可以从“Japanese listeners sometimes closed their eyes to enhance concentration.”

21. What does the speaker try to explain?

C)。 可以从“Learning how

different cultures signal respect can help you avoid misunderstandings.”

The audience clapped the pianist heartily.(听众热情地为钢琴演奏者鼓掌。)He clapped the champion on the back and congratulated him.(他拍拍冠军的肩背,向他表示祝贺。)

Passage Three

One of the greatest heartbreaks for fire fighters occurs when they fail to rescue a child from a burning building because the child, frightened by smoke and noise, hides under a bed or in a closet and is later found dead. Saddest of all is when children catch a glimpse of the

masked the fire fighter but hide because they think they have seen a monster (22). To prevent such tragedies, fire fighter Eric Velez gives talks to children in his community, explaining that they should never hide during a fire (23). He displays fire fighters’

equipment, including the oxygen mask, which he encourages his listeners to play with and put on. “If you see us,” Velez tells them, “don’t hide! We are not monsters. We have come to rescue you.” Velez gives his presentations in English and Spanish. Growing up inSan Francisco, he learnt

Spanish from his immigrant parents. Velez and other fire fighters throughoutNorth America, who give similar presentations, will never know how many lives they save through their talks. But it’s a fact that informative speaking saves lives (24). For example, several months after

listening to an informative speech, Pete Gentry inNorth Carolinarescued his brother who is choking on food, (25) by using the method taught by student speaker, Julie Paris. In addition to saving lives, informative speakers help people learn new skills, solve problems and acquire fascinating facts about the exciting world in which they live.

22. Why do some children trapped in a burning building hide from masked fire fighters?

A)。 从开始when children catch a glimpse of the

masked fire fighter but hide because they think they have seen a monster一句中便可得出因为不熟悉消防人员戴面具的形象,孩子们以为来救援的消防人员是怪兽,所以躲起来。

23. What does the passage tell us about fire fighter Eric Velez?

24. What do we learn about Pete Gentry?

25. What message is the speaker trying to convey?

He caught a glimpse of me when I passed by.(当我走过时,他瞥了我一眼。) The fans of the actress craned their necks to catch a glimpse of their idol.(那位女演员的崇拜者们伸长了脖子想看一看他们崇拜的偶像。) I glimpsed at her among the crowd before she disappeared from sight.(就在她即将消失在人群里之前,我瞥见了她。)

Section C

Almost every child, on the first day he sets foot in a school building, is smarter, more

doesn’tschooling – or, unless he is very unusual and very lucky, for the rest of his life. Already, by paying school-type formal instruction, he has done a task far more difficult, complicated and

– babies don’t even know that language exists – and he has found out how it works and learned to use it

learning other things as well, including many of the (35) “ that the schools think only they can teach him, and many that are more complicated than the ones they do try to teach him.

26. curious。

27. figuring things out。

28. independent。

29. interacting with。

30. abstract。

31. mystery。

32. appropriately。

33. trying it out。

34. refining。

35. concepts。

1. for the benefit of:意思为“为了„„的利益”,如:You must study hard for the benefit of

your own.

2. on the rise:意思为“为了„„的利益”,如:The cost of living is on the rise in the country.

Section C

Passage One

“Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths…”。而第二段中又提到:“It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates…”。

57.D)。由题干关键词the Forum’s report定位到文章第二和第三段,第三段第一句提到“But even

before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk”。

58.C)。 Pielke定位到文章第五段,该段提到“…the Forum’s report was ‘a

methodological embarrassment’because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses…”。

59.D)。由题干关键词Soren Andreasen定位到文章第六段,该段提到“He said the report was

aimed at world leaders…”。

60.B)。由题干关键词Kofi Annan定位到文章第七段,该段提高“…to focus on increasing the flow of

money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate

hazards…”。

Great dangers can result from misconceiving of the

enemy's intentions.

His giving up has put us in a position of the

utmost difficulty.

Passage Two

文章第一段提到“I say you only live once and we work hard and

what's the point if you can't go on holiday(我说你的生命只有一次,我们工作这么卖力,要是你不去度假那还有何意义)”,可见作者认为去度假,去享受生活,努力工作才有意义。

A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to

63.C)。根据题干中的YouGov poll of 2,000 people定位到第二段,原文提到“For many families the

recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2, 000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money”,意思是说“经济萧条不仅仅使得很多家庭取消了度假计划,调查还发现夫妻之间因为钱的争吵也增加”。

occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolizes, which may be different things to men and women”,由此可以判断他认为钱对男人和女人的意义不同,也就是说男人和女人对钱有不同的看法,后文的分析也说明了这一点。

65.B)。 文章最后一句话提到“In a healthy relationship, you don't have to

agree about money, but you have to talk about it”,可见作者认为对于钱夫妻双方不一定要观点一致,但是最好要经常交流,故B正确。

Share prices were buoyed up by hopes of an

end to the recession.(因经济衰退状况终止有望,股票价格得以保持高位。)

I wrote a memorandum to confirm our

verbal agreement.(我写了份备忘录以确认我们的口头协议。) This is a verbal translation of the prose.(这是那篇散文的逐字直译。)

W: Come on, it’s only a family reunion. So jeans and T-shirts are just fine.

Q: What does the woman mean?

【答案详解】由对话中的“So jeans and T-shirts are just fine”表明,女士认为只是家庭聚会,穿得随便点就可以了。

【答案详解】由对话中女士所说的“but my mother insists that he come”可知,她不得不邀请David。 Long Conversations

B)。 由对话中的“What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me – one I participate in.”

Conversation Two

W: Good evening, and welcome to this week’s business world, the program for and

about business people.

12.What is the woman doing?

13.What did Mr. Kayne do before he took over the bicycle shop?

C)。 When I was working full-time as a salesman for a big company可知,该男士以前是某公司的销售。

14.Why did the man take over a bicycle shop?

A)。 从对话中的“I knew then that as soon as I had enough money to get my own business going, I’ll do it”可知,该男士想自己做老板。

15.What do we learn about the people working in the shop?

A)。 由对话中的“Yeah, a couple of friends of mine who love biking as much as I do”可知,这些雇员都是老板的朋友。

If you take over Dora's job, you are sure to be caught in the middle.(如果接替多拉的工作,你一定会被搞得进退两难。)

Section B

We should remain the compatible

family relationships.
