In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.
Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman (新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.

One hot night last July, when our new baby wouldn’t or couldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of: a warm bottle, songs, gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable TV into his room, thinking that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill off the hours until dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, his little eyes focused brightly on the tube. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi’s forty-fifth birthday.
My wife and I heard no more of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.
I found in my baby’s behaviour a metaphor(隐喻,暗喻)for the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit(吐液)upon them. When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don’t read, that they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watching TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If television is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight it? Let them watch it all they want!
66. From the passage we know that the author is a(n) _____. A. doctor B. editor C. writer D. teacher 67. Why did the writer bring the portable TV into his baby’s room.
A. To amuse his baby B. To entertain himself C. To enjoy a celebration D. To help fall asleep 68. What is the propable meaning of the word “tip-toed” in the first paragraph? A. 蹑手蹑脚 B. 大步流星 C. 昂首挺胸 D. 左顾右盼 69. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To show that babies now are hard to please. B. To show a new function of TV
C. To advise people to let children watch TV. D. To show the bad influence of TV on children. 70. What do you think the author wants to express through the last two sentences?
A. People have no way to prevent children from watching too much TV. B. It is not necessary for people to force children to read.
C. People have to take action to protect children from the bad influence of TV. D. People should try to develop children’s interest in reading from an early age.
D
Imagine a boy from a small village in East Africa, He from a very early age has been looking after cattle. At twelve years old he knows more about cattle than most of you. However, he has never been to school. Has dais boy ever had any education?
Education is discovering about ourselves and about the people and things around us. All the people who care about us — our parents, brothers , sisters, friends — are our teachers. In fact, we learn something from everyone we meet. We start learning on the day we are born, not on the first day" we go to school . Every day we have new experiences, like finding a bird's nest, discovering a new street in our neighborhood, making friends with someone we didn't like before. New experiences are even more fun when we share them with other people.
Encouragement from the people around us enables us to explore things as much as possible. As we grow up, we begin to find out what we are capable of doing. You may be good at cooking, or singing or playing football. You find this out by doing these things. Just thinking about cooking doesn't tell you if you are good at it.
We learn so much just living from day to day. So why is school important? Of course you can learn some things better at home than at school, like how to do the shopping, and how to help old or disabled people who can' t do everything for themselves. At school, teachers help us to read and write. With their guidance, we begin to see things in different ways.
71. The writer takes the African boy as an example to show that _______. A. African children are very poor B. some children are unlucky C. education takes many ways D. schools are of great importance 72. In the eyes of the writer A. we have to learn from the people around us B. school is not important at all C. only the people caring for us can teach us D. education takes place everywhere 73. One can find out what lie is good at by A. the encouragement of people around B. the teachings of those he or she meets C. thinking of it when growing up D. trying and practicing it 74. How the writer looks at the role of school is that . A. school is not so important as our living places
B. school enables us to understand the world in other ways
C. school teaches us something useless at home D. school cannot prepare us for our daily lives A. everyone gets education from the day he or she is born B. different education trains different classes of people
C. school is absolutely necessary if one wants to understand the world D. everyone will find out what he or she is good at

Some people have the ideas that nothing can be done about their poor reading ability. They feel hopeless about it.Can you learn to read better, or must you agree that nothing can be done about it? To be sure, people’s abilities are different. You cannot expect to do everything as well as certain other people do.If all the students in a class tried out for basketball, some would be very good players; others would be very poor; and many would be in between. But even the very poor players can become much better players if they are guided in the right way, and with plenty of practice. It is the same with reading. Some seem to enjoy reading and to read well without any special help.Others find reading a slow and tiring job.In between, there are all degrees of reading ability. Many experiments have shown that just about every poor reader can improve his reading ability.Firstly, the poor readers were given tests of reading ability.Secondly, some of the causes of their poor reading were discovered, and then they were given special instruction and practice in reading. After a few months, another test of the same kind was given. In nearly all cases, these people had raised their reading scores.
