There was a girl whose parents died years ago. She had no sisters or brothers. She felt sad and lonely. She wanted to be loved very much.

One day, when she was walking in a forest, she saw a dragonfly(蜻蜓) caught in a thorn bush(多刺灌木丛). No matter how hard it tried to free itself, it failed every time. Children are natural scientists. They are interested in looking into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of expensive lab tools. You only have to share your children’s curiosity(好奇).

Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-old students to talk about working as a scientist. The children asked me questions about schooling and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another quietly. Finally I said, “Now that we’re finished, do you have questions of your own about science?”

After a long pause, a boy put up his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper(蚂蚱) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?” This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.

Secondly, give them time to think. Studies have shown that, after asking a question, adults usually wait only one second or less for an answer, do not leave time for children to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children can give more logical(合逻辑的), complete and creative answers.

Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child telling his idea in a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right.” or “Very good.”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can mean that discussion is over. Instead, you can say “That’s interesting.” or “I’d never thought of it that way before.” or come up with more questions or ideas.

Never push a child to “Think”. Children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target(目标) for your disagreement. D. To be rich. C. Afraid and angry. 52. When the girl was __________, she saw a dragonfly. A. playing with her neighbor C. crying for her dead mother A. Gold. B. Houses. 53. What did the girl want from the fairy? 54. What would be the best title of the passage? A. What is happiness. C. A fairy.

Lastly, show; don’t tell. Real-life feeling of nature is far more exciting than any lesson children learn from a book. Let children look at their fingertips(指尖) through a magnifying lens(放大镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner.

55. When children are in a science discussion, adults should ___________.

A. speak highly of the children.

B. praise the children immediately

C. end up their discussion with “That’s interesting”

D. leave time for them to come up with better ideas

56. What does “” refer to in the 6th paragraph?

A. Pushing children to think.

C. Talking about science. B. Finding the answer you want. D. Telling children to discuss.

57. These are the ways for adults to share children’s curiosity EXCEPT___________.

A. telling them encouraging stories instead of boring facts

B. offering them chances to see things by themselves

C. being patient when the children answer questions

D. persuading them to ask the questions of their own

D

Although cliff diving may bring great excitement, it’s a very dangerous

sport that people should be careful about. It is completely wrong to think that

the diver is cushioned(缓冲) by the water below—this could not be further

from the truth. When jumping from a cliff that is over 70 feet high, a diver

hits the water at over 46 mph (miles per hour). Such high speeds make the

point of contact feel like a wall, so the diving skills are very important.

Professional divers are trained and well-prepared to make dives. However,

non-professionals should never dive because a diver’s body position(体位) at the time of contacting water is very important to his or her safety. Because of the great danger, divers should always seriously think about their skills before trying any moves.

Although there is no truly safe way to jump off a cliff, non-professional divers are encouraged to pencil dive. To do a pencil dive, the jumpers leap their feet first off the cliff, keep arms at their sides with legs together and pointing downward. The diver should keep the body tight and vertical(垂直的). This is safer because it makes the point of contact smaller when the diver enters the water and puts less stress(压力) on the body.

Wearing a wet suit while diving will result in less pain. So it is wise for new divers to wear wet suits. But professional divers suggest staying away from water shoes. Although wearing shoes might seem like a good idea, they actually increase the force of impact(冲击力) because they increase the surface area of the diver at impact. The increased force of impact puts stress on a diver’s body and can lead to broken bones. Without a doubt, diving without shoes is the safer way to go.

Besides the height, speed, water depth and body position, it is also important for divers to make wise decisions when they are thinking about diving. Cliff diving tests both a

person’s

华知学园 师生一对一

physical and mental(心理的) skills, so it is never a good idea to jump with a sudden idea. A person needs to be of sound mind and in good health to even think about a dive. One should never try a dive if he has drunk wine. What’s more, a person should never make someone who is not feeling 100% confident dive.

58. What does “this could not be further from the truth” mean?

A. There’s no doubt that this idea is definitely true.

B. This idea is thought to be completely wrong.

C. It depends on the real situation on the spot.

D. Nobody knows whether this idea is true or not.

59. Why didn’t professional divers suggest wearing shoes? Because wearing shoes

can__________.

A. put more weight on to the diver

C. make the point of contact bigger

A. well-prepared and skillful

C. creative and smarty B. cause the diver to feel uncomfortable D. certainly lead to broken bones B. professional and strong D. confident and brave 60. According to the passage, a good cliff diver should be __________.

Ethiopian children are crazy about football but few of them have

footballs of their own. They have to play with a paper football.

Like all children, they find time to play but they also have to do a lot

of work. Some children have to help their parents look after younger

brothers or sisters from the age of five. Many young boys have to look

after animals and the girls have to help their mothers carry water.

At present only one third of small children go to primary school

because there are so many children and so few schools. The classes have to be very large. In one school I went to there were 90 children in a class!

Traditionally the Ethiopians do not eat many vegetables. This is very bad for children, so many schools have their own garden where youngsters can grow their own vegetables.

There is no public transport, so children have to walk to school. One child I spoke to had to walk for even six hours! Many walk for two or three hours. But the Ethiopians love going to school because they know how important education is.

The Ethiopian government wants more children to go to school, and organizations like UNICEF are helping them. Many of the children want to be doctors and they will have to work hard but they know that they are Ethiopia’s hope for the future.

Cliff diving tests both a

physical and mental(心理的) skills, so it is never a good idea to jump with a sudden idea. A person needs to be of sound mind and in good health to even think about a dive. One should never try a dive if he has drunk wine. What’s more, a person should never make someone who is not feeling 100% confident dive.

D. When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. E. That morning on the edge of the canyon, I asked myself a question.

___61___ I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a path. In the east, the sky was becoming light, but beside the path, it was still very dark. I knew it was there, but there was nothing to see.

After about a kilometer, a stranger appeared in front of me. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied, “you’ll get there in five minutes.” ___62___ I looked carefully over them, but it was sill too dark to see anything.

Suddenly, the clouds cleared and the rain stopped. ___63___I saw that ground fell away and down to a river, far below me. I was on the edge of the Grand Canyon, one of the wonders of the natural world.

I looked down to the Colorado River about 2 kilometers below me. If you put the three tallest buildings in the world at the bottom of the canyon, they still won’t reach the top. ___64___ How far is it? It’s 20 kilometers, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon disappeared into the distance … over 400 kilometers long. The Grand Canyon is not just big. It’s huge!

十、阅读与表达(共10分,每小题2分)
