Dear Dr. Takao Komatsuda,
It is my honor to recommend Dr. Cheng Liu to your JSPS postdoctoral program of your lab. As his supervisor, I have known Dr. Liu for 6 years since he joined in my laboratory for graduate study at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China since 2004. I am often aware of Dr. Liu's brightness and diligence, and he is one of the top students in my lab. I am sure his enthusiasm for basic and applied biological research is always a driving force. He would do a great job in your lab under your supervision because of his great talent and nice personalities.
When he was a freshman in my laboratory, I was so impressed by his potential to learn any techniques. He spent a few months to take training with platform techniques including molecular cloning, C-banding, in situ hybridization, AFLP and so forth. Dr. Liu has not only isolated several genomic repetitive sequences from Secale and Dasypyrum species, and localized them on the chromosomes by FISH, but also independently identified four new wheat-Dasypyrum breviaristatum addition lines with multi-disease resistance by molecular and cytogenetic methods.
Since Dr. Liu did excellent jobs in academic field and classes, he was chosen to attend the Ph. D joint program with Dr. Bernd Friebe at Kansas State University for two years, which supported by Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). He further revealed the evolutionary relationship between the three species of Dasypyrum , and successfully identified a set of wheat-Dasypyrum villosum Roberstanian-translocation lines using STS-based PCR markers and GISH.
As first and co-first author, he published several papers to the international peer-reviewed journals of crop genetics and breeding. He got high scores in his Ph. D defense in December 2010, and awarded excellent graduate students in our department.
Above all, I strongly recommend Dr. Cheng Liu to your post-doc program, and I strongly believe that he is an exceptional qualified candidate that you are looking for. I would like to provide any further information if needed.
Best Wishes
