To begin with, I would like to acknowledge the invaluable, particular, kind and selfless help of Mr. X, a Profession of the translation and linguistics, who has been my constant consultant in my writing this essay. If there are any errors, they are not his, but all mine. Without his help and encouragement, I would not complete the essay which is so perfect that my friends all like it. Therefore, I would extend my sincere and grateful thanks to my tutor‟s useful suggestion and support that I have got. In addition, I am also deeply indebted to my classmates. Because of their perpetual company and kind encouragement, which inspire me to read more relative books and continue to write it, I would overcome a lot of difficulties during the writing of this thesis. Furthermore, this thesis would not have been possible without the support and assistance that I received from the library assistants who genially supplied me with valuable and useful reference materials. What‟s most important thing is that I wish to express my special and heartfelt thanks to the Yangtze Normal University because it provide me a practical tool---library----where I can search the Internet for many meaningful periodicals and reference books to me timely as well. Finally, most particularly, my gratitude also goes to my family, including my lovely, honest and humorous youngest brother; my frank, passionate, optimistic and tall younger brother who is keen on playing basketball and making friends with others; my kind, beloved, tender and positive mother and my generous, sociable, talkative, wise and intelligent father whose love evokes my ambition of learning English. Thanks to their assistance and encouragement, I could finish my thesis confidently and timely, which is of great help for me.

On the whole, I would like to express my indebtedness to all those who helped me when I was writing this thesis. There is still something that I did not write so perfect because of my limited ability. I would work hard in the future .Thanks in advance.

Abstract

JANE EYRE was written by Charlotte Bronte, who was a famous British authoress in the 19th century. This is a story that it portrays an English woman who suffers a lot, pursing freedom and dignity, being herself and then obtaining happiness. Jane Eyre, the female protagonist, is so brave and firm that she dares to fight with others who oppress her. Therefore, I would like to consider her as a fighter. However, she also would evade the reality, which includes fragile aspects, so she may be a coward at that time. This paper would analyze Jane Eyre‟s dual role with the help of specific plots, which makes readers deeply understand the main idea of the paper. Finally, I am hopeful that everyone would learn a lot from it, especially her adamancy and independence, to be a kind, dedicative, respectable and elegant man.

I. Introduction

A. The introduction of the author

To begin with, I would like to introduce something about the author to you. Charlotte Bronte, who was born in 1816 and died in 1855, was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England. His father was a pastor, and they lived poorly. He studied in a boarding school, and then he became a teacher in a school, and after that he became a tutor of a girl in a rich family. He was a great British authoress in the 19th century, and his works always describe poor bourgeois‟

circumstances, including their loneliness and struggle,so Marx called the "outstanding school", led by Charles Dickens.JANE EYRE, her debut, is also a masterpiece, which still was welcomed by the readers.

B. Brief introduction of the novel

In addition, I aim to introduce the novel, JANE EYRE,to you. This novel is an intensely romantic and realistic novel, a popular work, a novel smacking an autobiography. It ranks as one of the greatest and most perennially popular works of English fiction. Although the poor but plucky heroine has ordinary appearance, she possesses an indomitable spirit, a sharp wit and great courage. She is forced to battle against the exigencies of a cruel guardian, a harsh employer and a rigid social order. All of which circumscribes her life and position when she becomes governess to the daughter of the mysterious, sardonic and attractive Mr. Rochester. However, there is great kindness and warmth in this epic love story, which is set against the magnificent backdrop of the Yorkshire moors .On the whole, she suffers so much that she has to pursue what she wants.

C. Others’ opinion on Jane’s personality

Furthermore, I would add something important that is about others opinion on Jane‟s personality. Some people hold that she grows up from inferiority to confidence, which are extreme characters. Some people believe that she is excessive confident, while some people do not agree to it. Some people think she is a mutineer for freedom. For those who study religious literature, they would like to consider her as a fighter and rescuer because women were treated inequitable at that time.

D. My opinion on Jane’s personality

Finally, with the help of specific plots in a bid to reveal her personality, which is of great importance to understand her thought and behavior, for my part, I would analyze it through giving two opposed figures----dual role. It is she that rolls a fighter and coward into one, which can‟t be divided into several ingredients because her personality is complicated and overlapping throughout her life.

II. Being a fighter

A. Presenting a figure of a fighter in her childhood

She is an orphan of 10 years old and lives with her aunt at Gateshead, where she doesn‟t get on well with her children and servants. Because of the different status and their discrimination from others, she can‟t play with them but read books secretly. One day, Jhon Reed, a schoolboy of 14 years old and 4years older than her, gets home and shouts at Jane with the disgusting

expression. He is so angry that he intends to beat her heavily. Maybe, she would bear anything because she is used to living an obedient and desperate life. However, she doesn‟t. The scene is like this:

He ran headlong at her; she felt him grasp my hair and her shoulder; he had closed with a desperate thing. She doesn‟t very well know what she did with her hands but he called her „Rat! Rat!‟. And she also called him a wicked and cruel boy, like a murderer, a slave-drive and the Roman emperor. In this scene, she is such a brave and traitorous girl because she fights with him, which is not so usual because she obedient like a sheep all the time. How amazing it is!

After “a short battle”, she is punished by her aunt. Therefore, she is locked in the “red room”, and Jane begins to realize that she needs to be saved from her blind fear of authority and be self-reliant. Owing to these experiences, she dares to fight for freedom and dignity though she meets a lot of troubles.

B. Reflecting a figure of a girl who is very independent and tolerant at Lowood Institution Before she study in the school, her aunt has told that Mr. Brocklehurst, a capital of the school, should be careful because Jane is a totally liar. Therefore, when she makes a mistake—one piece of paper is smudged, and he punishes her. So she feels upset and gloomy, and wants to give up. With the help of one of her classmates, she cheers up. At last, she gains strength from her teacher and fellow students to achieve her independence. What‟s most important thing is that she knows the importance of duty and self-control.

She is a girl with adamancy when you really know her school‟s condition where students have little food to eat and shabby clothes to wear. If they infect illness, such as the flu, many of them may pass away. She is, I think, a fighter. She is forced to live independently and tolerantly. Therefore, she struggles and overcomes many difficulties. In the end, she is a lucky dog who avoid being dead.

C. Valorously pursuing love

Although Mr. Rochester becomes a poor and blind man, she returns home from the Moor House and accompanies him. Then, she marries him at a quiet church happily without other relatives and friends attending. It is distinct from the last case that she escapes from their house because she doesn‟t want to be his mistress, who is immoral if they shall get together without the permission of the law, but now they can be together without any limit and anxiety. She is engaged in her happy life. What should not be neglect is that she doesn‟t marry St. John who she doesn‟t love, and she doesn‟t want to be a tool of God, though he thinks they are suit for being a couple. This novel embodies a figure that she doesn‟t surrender to the reality. She is a woman who has her own idea and thoughts, valorously pursuing love. So, happy marriage belongs to her.

B. Summary

This paper is not capable of writing down all the scenes of her positive characters. However, she deserves a fighter, who sets a good example for us. It is a must to fight for freedom, love and other meaningful things. As an old saying goes, every coin has two sides. It is the same with Jane. III. Being a coward

A. Giving in to her malicious aunt

There is a scene that it is related with her aunt, which shows the bad relationship between them. For example, after fighting with John Reed, she is locked in a red-room where her uncle died. Her body is suffering, so she crakes in order to get out of it. When her aunt takes a look at her because of her loudly voices, and then she leaves without any sympathy. At that situation, she is afraid of the ghost of her uncle extremely. She can‟t keep calm and waked, and she feels that she has seen her uncle. Everything is terrible. Therefore, everything that she has tried to do is not

effective. Finally, she becomes desperate and overwhelming pains due to her aunt‟s callousness.

Although she hates her aunt so much, she still gives up struggling and yields to powers. What‟s worse, when she is asked a question whether she would like to live with the rich or poor family, she would rather stay at the rich family than live in a poor family because she thinks it is impossible to survive in a poor one. As a result, she is not a girl who is a total and complete mutineer.

All in all, she is weak when she is confronted with difficulties. Besides, she is not enough to bear everything hostile, so she surrenders.

B. Dreaming the house, the Thornfield Hall, fired by a lunatic woman

There is a woman, Bertha Mason, who used to be a rich and beautiful lady. And she married Mr. Rochester who was poor in the West Indies fifteen years ago. She lived with him at Thornfield Hall. However, it was the beginning of her nightmare. She was locked by her husband and lost anything including wealth, love and freedom. She was seen as a lunatic woman by him. However, he conceals the fact, so Jane doesn‟t know why Bertha Mason takes revenge on him sometimes.

One night, Jane dreams the Thornfield Hall that is burning and Mr. Rochester becomes a poor and injured man. In her unconscious mind, she hopes marry a man who does not show off his treasury but loves her sincerely and honorably. The equal life is a cup of her tea. Furthermore, the rich husband is insignificant and unnecessary for her life. I think, however, she is afraid of the reality and not so bold. For my part, the dream may be a hint of her true thoughts in her mind. Above all, she cannot go out of the trap of society. Nevertheless, it is likely to achieve it through a mad woman who is capable of doing what she wants, likes and hates. From this scene, we can conceive a figure that is not totally independent and compromises with others. As a result, it demonstrates her frail character barely.

C. Summary

Jane is one of women as ordinary as others all over the world, so she cannot change someone or even her fate. Because of her limit ability, it is the reason why she would evade the reality and relinquish thoughts in her mind. She also follows the crowd to live for she has no choice but to do it, which embodies her fragile and timid character.

IV. Conclusion

From this paper, her personality is clear presented for us. On the one hand, she is brave and independent because she is so bold that she does what she can to pursue freedom, dignity and love. On the other hand, she has a character of frailty because there are few people supporting her. However, she must fight for anything, so it is bound to failure. We can give a natural and essential conclusion that she is a special and pioneered woman whose spirits affect us. At length, we should work hard and chase after precious things, such as freedom, just, love and so forth. Only in this way, can we be a kind, dedicative, respectable and elegant man through learning her adamancy, independence and so forth.
