Passage1
In your new journey of life, I feel it necessary to remind you that entering university is the triumph of your past hard work. In the future four years, I expect you to make the most of comprehensive library, sports facilities, faculty members and other abundant resources that success needs. Although you may feel overwhelmed by wealth of courses and dorm life, I assume that the new unique experiences far outweigh uncomfortable ones and they will help you reap the valuable lessons that you need in the future life. I believe as long as you take pleasure in challenging yourself and pairing passion with responsibilities, you can build a strong foundation for your future.
Passage2
Watching my daughter back her truck and drive away, I feel glad for being finally free of the responsibilities for her. She left a mess in her bedroom. There are clothes she tossed aside everywhere on the floor and various books on her desk. And the drawers of the desk are filled with papers filed by year and subject. I spend quite a long time straightening up her room and think about turning it into a fancy guest room. Suddenly, a large envelope marked with “DO NOT THROW AWAY” captures my attention. As I open it, I find inside the envelope there are letters, greeting cards and comics clipped from magazines, which are all our gifts to her and tokens of her childhood. I reverse my mind. I try hard to keep back my tears and put the clothes where they were. Tokens of her childhood will await her. So will we, with open arms.
Passage3
The college campus is being transformed into a new age of electronics. With many schools offering wireless Internet access anywhere on campus, colleges have become the most Internet accessible spots in the world. Students can use the wonders of the Internet to do homework, review lecture outlines, take part in class discussions and network online with your friends. In the meantime, colleges around the world have been replacing their old computer systems with a free and the most advanced online system. The anywhere-anytime access has already yielded amazing benefits in education.
Passage4
In an era of heightened heroism, heroes can be average people who follow the call of instinct when caught up in extraordinary circumstances and rush courageously toward danger regardless of their own safety to shield others from harm. Heroes can also be first responders who, with the knowledge of existing danger, overcome their fear and rush toward danger to help those in need. In both of them, we find heroism. Hopefully, by honoring them, we would all be inspired by their heroic deeds and become heroes.
Passage5
The annual Australian marathon is one of the toughest races in the world, a harsh test of endurance for the world’s top athletes. Cliff Young, a toothless 61-year-old famer was to take part in the race. Cliff was left far behind at the beginning of marathon. But he still kept running and by the fifth night, he had overtaken all the other runners and smashed the record. To this day,
Cliff Young remains a magnificent reminder and brilliant example of how ordinary individuals can inherently achieve remarkable results. As the saying goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” With determination and preparation, we can overcome the difficulties and finally achieve success.
Passage6
In the traditional way of thinking, early employment builds character. We compared the grades of students who work a great deal with those who work in limited amounts or not at all. We also contrasted workers with non-workers, on different indicators of their commitment to education. Additionally, we followed students over time as they increased or decreased their work hours, and we assessed how different patterns of employment altered school performance and engagement. Our findings indicate that for many students, working 20 hours or more a week can contribute to decreased school performance and increased drug and alcohol use. It’s time to abandon this appealing myth! We conclude that students should resolve to work no more than 10 hours per week if they want to be successful in school.
Passage7
That numerous accounts of cheating, fraud, corruption crowd our news paper and TV news in current society reflects on the phenomenon: honesty disappears. Actually, there exist many stories of dishonesty amongst all layers of society as typically exemplified by students in campus, they fake their term papers by locating an appropriate website and purchase one. Therefore, internet, once hailed as ultimate learning tool, will be the best aid yet for cheating. What ’s deeply troubling is that there exist many forms of cheating in university. For the part of teachers, they can launch a campaign to eliminate one form of cheating: hired cheaters. With awareness of growing plague of cheating and its ill effects on individuals and society, we must restore the sense of integrity. Otherwise, the whole society will descend into chaos. As far as each citizen is concerned, we can participate in the combat against dishonesty. Only by this, there will be an affirmative, durable bond among people and our society will thrive and prosper in the long run.
Passage8
The memories I have of female friends and of male friends are entirely different. With women, I could be open, emotionally honest, and transparent. With male friends, it seemed impossible to express caring feelings no matter how deep the friendship was. The great difference in my communication styles can be justified according to a research:It seems that men and women have very different emotional and rational processes. We are born with very different genetic tendencies which society encourages as either “masculine ” or “feminine ”. So it is perfectly normal for one to treat his / her male friends and female friends in entirely different ways.
