2015 Was a Warm, Wild Year. What’s Next?
2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand, and not just in politics.
A record warm December raised average temperatures enough to make 2015 the second hottest year on record in the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climate Monitoring Annual Report,
which was released Thursday.
The United Nations had previously reported that 2015 was shaping up to be the warmest year on record for the whole planet.
Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. and saw ten weather- or climate-related disasters that each caused at least $1 billion in damage in the U.S. and killed a total of 155 people. These include a drought, two floods, five severe storms, a wildfire, and a winter storm.
The average U.S. temperature was 54.4°F, 2.4°F above the 20th century average, and second only to 2012's record warmth. This was also the 19th year with average temperatures above the average for the century.
Every state reported above-average annual temperatures. The warming was particularly obvious across most of the eastern half of the country in December, when many places saw temperatures 30 degrees above normal and many records were set.
This mirrored changes seen in the Arctic that month, when temperatures rise sharply to 50 degrees above normal. Part of this warming was driven by a strong El Niño, or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report.
The analysis comes less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the effects of climate change. “Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it comes to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture" for doing so, he said.
NOAA's climate monitoring center doesn't issue predictions for future weather, but the agency's Climate Prediction Center does. That team's forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual. As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, "climate change means extreme weather is the new normal."
41. According to the NOAA’s report, we can know that ____ .
A. 2015 is the second hottest year on record in the US
B. 2015 was the warmest year on record for the whole planet
C. 2015 was the wettest on record in the US
D. 2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand
42. What disasters hit the US in 2015?
A. flood, hurricane and storm
B. tornado, wildfire and drought
C. drought, flood and storm
D. wildfire, earthquake and storm
43. Which of the following is not the cause of the warming in the Arctic?
A. strong El Niño
B. periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean
C. global warming,
D. carbon reduction
44. Gail Whiteman’s words implies that _________.
A. extreme weather is becoming more and more frequent
B. climate change lead to extreme weather
C. We will not have normal weather any more
D. Climate change is quite normal.
45. Which of the following statement is not true?
A. 2012 is the hottest year on record in the US.
B. 10 weather-related disasters caused at least $1 billion in damage in the US.
C. The 20 century average temperature is 52°F.
D. The US and many other countries will adopt measures to deal with the climate change.

A few things to consider before booking a flight:
With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.
Getting the best fare
Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.
Fly during the least popular times.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.
Choose your seat later.
Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.
Fly on holidays.
You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Don’t wait until the last-minute to book.
Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting
the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.
Avoiding extra fees
Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to pay them if you don’t have to. Here are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport.
Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know.
46. Why do we choose flying to our destination?
A. The airfare is getting cheaper.
B. Sometimes it is the only way to go.
C. It doesn’t need extra money
D. The fuel cost is rising,
47. Rate on early morning flight is usually reduced because_____.
A. many people don’t like to get up early.
B. it can reduce the chance of getting on an overbooked flight
C. It can avoid the delayed because of the flight
D. It is the slowest time to fly.
48. If you want to get a suitable seat without paying extra money, you’d better ____.
A. pick your seat when you book online.
B. show up early on your travel day
C. hold back the best seat until flight day
D. pay the airfare ahead of time
49. You can’t get the best ticket by _________.
A. booking between 40-90days before your trip
B. reserving on Tuesday mornings
C. choosing to fly on major holidays
D. fixing the time on summer

The relationship between exercise and cancer has long puzzled experts.
Exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer. People who regularly exercise generally prove to be much less likely to develop or die from the disease than people who do not. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which typically leads to a short-term increase in inflammation(炎症) throughout the body. Inflammation can contribute to higher risks for many cancers. Now, a new study in mice may offer some clues into the relationship between exercise and cancer. It suggests that exercise may change how the immune system deals with cancer by boosting certain immune cells and other chemicals that, together, can relieve cancer or fight it off altogether.
To try to better understand how exercise can protect the body against cancer, scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and other institutions decided
to closely examine what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease.
The scientists first implanted skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals nothing. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had increased the cancer cells than the sitting animals and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller damage.
In a way, running seemed to be helpful in fighting against the cancer.
Next, the scientists undertook the far more challenging task of making the process backward. To start, they drew blood from both the runners and sitting animals and cancer cells in both groups. Then they looked at how the various samples were different.
As expected, they found much higher levels of the beneficial chemicals in the blood of the exercising animals, especially right after they had been working out on the wheels but also at other times of the day.
So the scientists repeated their original experiment multiple times. But in some of these follow-up experiments, they injected the runners with a substance that blocked the production of beneficial chemicals and gave sitting animals large doses of added chemicals.
Then they again looked at the animals’ blood and other cells.
What they now saw was that when running mice could not produce certain chemicals, they developed cancer at the same rate as the sitting animals, while the sitting animals that had been injected with extra chemicals fought off their cancer better than other sitting mice.
With these results, “we show that voluntary wheel running in mice can reduce the growth of cancer” said Pernille Hojman, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen who oversaw the new study.
“But mice, obviously, are not people, and it is impossible to know from this study whether a similar process occurs in humans. ”Dr. Hojman said.
“So the theory,” she said, “that seemed to partially protect the running mice in this study from cancer, can also happen in people,” If we still need it, to get up and move.
50. By doing the experiment, the scientists wanted to _______.
A. better understand how exercise can protect the body against cancer
B. prove exercise can contribute to higher risk for many cancers
C. undertake a challenging task of making the process
D. show moderately intense exercise will increase beneficial chemicals in people.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her„ she was such an embarrassment.
I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed that I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school„ “Your mom only has one eye?!” and they laugh at me.
I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye?! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond.
That night„ I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.
Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I’m living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom.
This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me. It was my mother„ Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.
And I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” And to this, my mother quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared. Thank goodness„ she doesn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.
One day, however, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the poor house, that I used to call a home„just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not flow off a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand„. it was a letter to me.
She wrote:
My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And„ I won’t visit Seoul anymore„ but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school„. For you„ I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching
you having to grow up with only one eye„ so I gave you mine„ I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me.
My World is falling down. I hated the person who only lived for me . I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds„

How to Improve a good English Writing
Whether you're learning English as a second language or are a native speaker who's never had the skills for writing, improving your English composition skills is very important. Knowing your shortcomings and practicing will allow you to write prose that is at first simply grammatically correct and eventually sparkling with style. To do this you may need the following suggestions. ____61 It will give your audience a more vivid picture. Several dictionary websites offer word-of-the-day emails that you can add to your storage of word choices. Using descriptive words within context can grab the reader's attention and contribute to a better writing style. ____62 Using varied sentence structures gives writing a visual appeal. Simple sentences may be easy to write, but using compound sentences allows you to convey a more complex message. Examine what sentence structures you currently use and practice structures that you tend to avoid. ____63 If you're a native speaker of a different language, having to translate in your head slows you down, and can easily lead to errors. Study English grammar if you are having difficulties. Look up the rules whenever you're having difficulties or read a grammar book all the way through. It may be boring, but it's extremely helpful. ____64 Decide which tense to use for a particular piece and stay within that tense. If you are writing an essay, use third person throughout. If you are writing a story, first person may be a good option. Keeping agreement within the voice you have chosen will improve the quality of your work. _____65 One of the best ways to improve writing is to learn from others. Reading literature in the style you want to learn more about can benefit your own writing style and give you inspiration.
Practice writing! The more you write, the better writer you'll become. Every skill requires regular repetition to achieve mastery, whether playing a musical instrument, flying a jet or writing good English essays. Practice does indeed make perfect

第二节:书面表达(满分30分)
Recently we have had a discussion about good habits for the future. As we all
know, positive habits will make a great difference to our future.
On the one hand, positive habits like working hard make us aware of the
significance of life and help us to live a better life we are desperate for. What’s
more, during the process of developing good habits, we’ll shape ourselves and make
greater contributions to society. On the other hand, negative habits are destructive to us since they mislead us to do things carelessly, which discourages us from achieving success.
As for how we develop good habits, what’s commonly believed is that life is a constant fight between good habits and bad habits. Patience is to developing good habits what water is to fish, so we’d better remind ourselves to stick to good habits. In addition, good habits are created by repetition. Only in this way can we own good habits and guarantee a bright future.

C. undertake a challenging task of making the process
D. show moderately intense exercise will increase beneficial chemicals in people.
